Dr. Renee LaFleur, Professor of History at UT Martin, will be presenting her research March 19, 2026, 6 p.m. at the Martin Public Library. The program titled "Doing in Private What Men Did in Public: Women's Study Clubs in Martin, Tennessee" will explain how women’s study clubs of the Progressive Era provided a middle ground, a space in which women felt comfortable doing that which men did in public.  White elite women in Martin used this space to build organizational skills and networks that they needed to successfully lead civic reforms and wartime activities. The program is sponsored by AAUW Martin Branch as part of Women’s History Month.
